Memories In A Box Studio Project.

I collaborated with my team mate, Celine Yap, for this project. The backstory behind this project is about how Celine’s mother used to work in a Sari sari store in the Philippines when she was a teenager. She hustled through her youth because she wanted to live a different life. She worked very hard and managed to move 
to Singapore in her twenties.

Due to covid 19, she’s unable to visit her family in the Philippines. Hence, We wanted to bring the Philippines to her and at the same time wanted other Singapore Filipinos to feel a sense of nostalgia when looking at the sari-sari store we have built. The sari sari store is also a reminder and appreciation of her hard work and past hardships We want her mom to reminisce and feel at home with our memories in a box.

The making process.

This was the first time for both of us making and building something from scratch. There were many trial and errors from finding the right materials to the crafting process, every detail in the sari-sari luggage bag store was hand crafted.

We did a lot of research on the color, food, drinks, snacks and posters that are commonly seen around or sold in a traditional Filipino sari-sari store. We also had to learn about the material of the
buildings in order to mimic the actual store.

The Crafting Journey.

It was a very tough but fun journey. The crafting proccess was a challenge as many experimentation needed to happen in order to get to the final product. Materials used are styrofoam, cardboard, metal wires, fabric, wooden ice cream sticks, paper and plastic.

Graphic design element part of the sari-sari store were the poster designs where we were inspired by commonly seen posters placed around a traditional sari-sari store but putting a spin to it. We made it silly,
cute and funny to show Celine’s mother personality and incorporating her old photos into the
poster as well to show that it is her store.
